this piece is called phoenix. for those unaware the phoenix is a mythical bird, however, the more interesting part about that, at least in relation to this piece is that they “rise from the ashes”. fire is something people often think of as nothing but a pure destructive force, however, it is often also tied with rebirth. burning crops before a new harvest, cleaning wounds through cauterization, or a mythical bird being reborn through its own death. rebirth is a strong theme within this piece. the distortion i created around the original statue base is meant to look like it’s burning up and away. through the destruction of marble, a medium that humans have been using as a form of expression for years, a new art form can be born. the song accompanying the piece is Besidju by Shamana ft. Joji. while the song is slick, and vibey as all hell, that wasn’t the reason for my choice in the song. (though the heavy base did help with syncing the video playback to the audio’s peaks) i chose the song because it is not until new art forms and old art forms can co-exist that growth can happen for both genres. to any up and coming traditional artists, i hope one day i can exist besidju in a gallery/
